A Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Kids Playroom

Spring is right around the corner, making it the perfect time to tackle the chaos that typically accumulates in a kid’s playroom. Over time, toys seem to multiply allowing the clutter to build up and organizational systems to get forgotten.

Consider getting your child involved! This will teach them about responsibility and they’ll learn the value of their toys.

Preparation

Before diving straight into cleaning, take a moment to assess the current state of your kid’s playroom. Find any problems, evaluate the clutter, and work out what needs to be done.

Gather the necessary cleaning supplies such as cloths, dusters, mops, vacuums, and cleaning solutions. Don’t forget to grab bin bags either!

Declutter

With any deep clean, you should start by decluttering. Sort through all the toys and belongings in the playroom. Consider creating three piles to help: keep, donate, or sell and dispose of responsibly. Make sure to be ruthless in your decisions too; if a toy is broken or missing pieces, it’s time to let it go. You can donate or sell toys that your child has outgrown or lost interest in too.

Decluttering helps free up space, making it easier to organize the remaining items.

Organize

Next, you’ll want to organize the remaining toys and belongings. Investing in storage solutions such as bins, baskets, and toy chests to keep the room nice and tidy. You could even consider using shelves or hanging organizers to maximize your space.

Sort the toys into categories before labeling the bins and baskets; this makes it easier for your child to find and put toys away independently.

Cleaning the Playroom

Once you’ve decluttered and organized, cleaning will be much easier. Be careful with what cleaning products you use; commercial ones tend to be highly toxic and can release strong fumes. It’s best to use warm soapy water or child-friendly products.

First, put any toys or dressing-up clothes that can and need to be washed in the washing machine. You should also put any linens or removable covers in the wash too. Just make sure to follow any care instructions beforehand! Whilst there being cleaned, you can get on with the room itself.

Dust the corners and wipe down any surfaces such as your shelves, windowsills, door frames, and even wall trims. Getting rid of any dust, dirt, and grime that might have accumulated since the last clean. Don’t forget your light fixtures as well as behind and underneath furniture!

Give your floors a vacuum too. If you’ve got carpet, consider using a carpet cleaner to get rid of any lingering stains. If you don’t have a textile floor, instead opt for luxury vinyl tile (LVT), laminate, or even cork flooring, you can mop them over to give them a deeper clean. Just be careful to not use an excessive amount of water!

Spring Cleaning Your Kid’s Playroom

As you look around the now clutter-free playroom, you’re probably reluctant to let your kid go and play, ruining your hard work. There are ways to keep it tidy though!

You could start by creating specific play zones. Not only does this make the most of your child’s playroom, but it also keeps certain messes contained. For example, you could have an arts and crafts section and a building zone for blocks and construction toys. This way you won’t have to clear up paint or glue from all over the room nor will you find blocks scattered around.

It’s essential to keep a regular cleaning routine, such as dusting and vacuuming. You should also encourage your child to clean up after themselves to keep the mess to a minimum.
